Policies and environmental uncertainties
The world is as it is because of the certainties
From the song "Frontera" by Jorge Drexler
It is worth remembering that all policies and political decisiones have environmental consequences: agricultural policies (promoting a certain type of crop or deactivating it), forestry policies (planting trees or cutting them), mining policies (allowing mineral extraction or prohibiting them), strategies for territorial planning or urban planning, and even commercial or social policies, all have some kind of impact on the environment.
In other words, it can be said that from the environmental point of view there are NO totally innocuous policies. However, it is not easy to determine what the environmental impacts of the political strategies are or will be. At the moment of evaluating them, multiple factors come into play, difficult to consider, and above all, varied interests that do not allow to examine "objectively" the issues.
When policies are defined there are people who, by opinions, beliefs or personal interests, are against, while others for similar reasons are in favor. There are some environmental issues that due to diverse reasons, technical, economic, social, cultural, political and even philosophical, are especially conflicting.
In environmental issues we should not be naive. The diverse positions express varied interests and searches of protagonisms. Scientific rigor is in the background. We know that in science there are no absolute truths. Many sharp and dogmatic beliefs that were expressed historically in the name of science were denied by the stubborn facts of reality leading to new interpretations. Uncertainty is an essential part of the evolution of human knowledge.
To face the dynamism of knowledge must leave room for doubt. Of course we must affirm ourselves in the facts, develop our points of view and act accordingly, but always considering the option of changing course if necessary.
The environmental discussions, which are political discussions, must take place in a framework of rigor, honesty and tolerance.
It is the best, perhaps the only way, to defend the environment and the organisms that inhabit it.
