The river basin covers more than 3 million square kilometers. Its route since it was born in the mountains of Altai in Central Asia, including territories of Kazakhstan, Mongolia and China, flowing into the Kara Sea in the Arctic Ocean, across the Gulf of Obi.

. The great river basin, during the last decades, has become the main place of extraction of hydrocarbons of the Russian Federation. These human activities, sources of wealth and also pollution, threaten rich and varied natural environments, already weakened by climate warming.
Administratively, its course includes Altai krai, Novosibirsk oblst and Tomsk oblast and the autonomous districts of Janti-Mansi and Yamalo-Mansi and Yamalo-Nenets.
