Pablo Escobar, known Colombian trafficker of illegal drugs managed to assemble a powerful criminal organization and amassed a fortune spent on exotic whims, like buying zebras, giraffes and hippos for a home zoo mounted in his hacienda "Napoli" on the Magdalena River, Department of Antioquia: The Hacienda is described as follows: "The Hacienda Napoles is a giant area, where animals of different species live in their ecosystem also there are severak attractions as a fictional simulation of a jurassic park, a coliseum, a portentous house, ruins of a collection of cars and airfield. La Hacienda Napoles was built by famed Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar, who was seized in the eighties. It is now a park attraction. "
When Escobar died in 1993, the Hacienda was abandoned and several hippos escaped to the adjacent rivers causing concern to nearby towns and bewilderment to the Colombian authorities. Hippos are dangerous for people living near waterways but the Colombian public opposes their sacrifice. It would seem that there are dozens of hippos adapting to the Colombian rivers which look similar to some African rivers ecosystem. It is not easy to solve the problem. It is difficult to capture them because there may be more than one hundred. Killing them does not seem to be an acceptable option for the Colombian public. They could be captured and transported to zoos and even returned to their natural environment in Africa. However, to capture them is cumbersome because there may be more than one hundred and they may have traveled to many wetlands and nearby rivers. Perhaps Colombians should allow nature to take its course and at the same time take measures to prevent damage to surrounding towns.
